Pizza for Producers

Pizza for Producers invites farmers and farmworkers to gather around a wood-fired oven to learn the art of crafting pizza from scratch. While the focus is on creating delicious food with minimal ingredients, the true aim is foster a sense of community and address the mental health challenges prevalent in the agricultural industry.

Create a Community

This initiative is a suicide prevention program recognizing the unique stressors faced by those in agriculture - from climate change threats to financial worries - to provide a platform for individuals to come together, share experiences, and seek support.

Research indicates that a significant portion of agricultural producers experience stress that affects their well-being and relationships. However, barriers such as limited access to mental health resources and cultural stigmas often deter individuals from seeking help. The prevailing notion of self-reliance within farming communities compounds these challenges.

Farmworkers, who endure physically demanding labor and face additional stresses like low pay and language barriers, are also impacted. Despite the prevalence of mental health concerns, reliable data on depression and suicide rates among farmers and farmworkers remains elusive.

Yet, amidst these challenges, there exists a deep-rooted attachment to the land and a sense of pride in agricultural work. For many, farming is not merely a livelihood but a calling driven by the "Agrarian Imperative" - a genetic predisposition to persevere through adversity for the sake of producing life's essentials.

First-generation farmers also exemplify this dedication, finding purpose in sustainable agriculture despite facing personal crises. However, the culture of stoicism within the farming community often hinders discussions about mental health needs.

Pizza for Producers events serve as a model for building community and reducing stigma surrounds mental health in agriculture. additionally, progrmas offering free or reduced-cost counseling aim to make mental health services more accessible.

By fostering a supportive environment and encouraging dialogue, Pizza for Producers aims to break the cycle of stress and isolation prevalent in the agricultural sector. Just as dough needs time to rest and stretch, farmers and farmworkers serve the opportunity to relax, connect, and support one another in their shared journey.

How Does it Work?

Building the Oven

Producers love tackling challenges and creating new things. They are driven by curiosity and a desire to improve existing systems while taking pride in the finished product.

Making the Dough

The repetition of steady and vigorous kneading can be calming and contemplative. It's also a good way to relieve stress and instills the honor of knowing that your hard work will be appreciated and enjoyed by others.

Selecting the Toppings

Adding, subtracting and customizing toppings gives bakers the ability to tailor things to their specific needs. Using local ingredients also shows pride in the products producers have grown.

Baking the Pizza

There is a sense of satisfaction that comes from baking. Following a recipe or customizing one to match the ingredients available generates feelings of self-worth and self-reliance that benefit the baker and those who taste it knowing it was made from scratch.
